When teeth are removed it can take up to 6 months for the bone and gums to form a stable shape. During this time, a plastic "temporary" or "immediate" denture can be made. A partial denture can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. Full dentures are needed when there are no teeth left in the upper or lower jaw. A denture must be removed for cleaning and should be taken out at night. There are a variety of types, but they usually include a metal and/or plastic base carrying plastic or porcelain artificial teeth. Metal clasps are usually used to keep the denture in position. Where possible, these are hidden so that they can't be seen during smiling and talking. It is very important to have realistic expectations of dentures. They should help you to eat, speak and smile confidently, but even the best dentures won't feel the same as natural teeth.
With great improvements in dental materials and techniques, we are increasingly able to offer a wide choice of affordable options. In the case of dentures we take a great deal of care in providing the best value for money and to personalising them to the needs of each individual patient.
You can expect the dentures to take 4-6 weeks to be finalised. This is because we need to build up the dentures gradually starting with the first impression through to the final stages. We will need to see you on a weekly basis to complete this. The teeth that are put on the denture can be chosen from a wide variety of shades, shapes and strengths. You may have the teeth spaced or crossed if you wish thus characterising your teeth to mimic your natural ones.
Partial Dentures replace missing teeth and can be removed from the mouth for cleaning. They are sometimes used to improve appearance and sometimes to increase chewing efficiency. Some natural teeth are always present and these may be used to support the denture. Partial dentures may be plastic-based or metal-based.
Valplast are a type of flexible denture used to take the place of missing natural teeth that have fallen out or had to be extracted. Valplast dentures are the best quality partial flexible dentures on the market. Not only that, but they are flexible, durable, and very comfortable – not to mention they look very natural.
Traditional dentures are made from acrylic (pink plastic) or metal (cobalt chrome) materials. Valplast dentures are made from a very tough nylon material. Acrylic and cobalt chrome dentures are generally heavier than Valplast dentures. They are lighter and smaller and fit tighter than other dentures.
This practice offers our patients an alternative denture to the traditional acrylic denture. This metal (chrome cobalt) denture has the following advantages over traditional acrylic dentures:
The general result therefore is that the denture normally feels much more comfortable than an acrylic denture.
