Veneers – how do they work?
Veneers effectively change the shape or shade of your teeth. They might be used to cover a stain that does not respond to normal whitening. You might want a chip or crack covered, or you might want to close a small gap by extending the tooth or teeth by the side of it. Veneers are fitted over the top of your existing tooth and the shape or colour of the veneer makes this subtle adjustment.
Your current tooth needs to be in a reasonably good state of health to support the veneer but your dentist will assess the suitability of your teeth at your appointment.
Once you decide to go ahead, the dentist will file around half a millimetre of enamel off any teeth you want to have covered. This is because, although veneers are very thin, they will still need this adjustment in order to sit completely flush with the other teeth. An impression of the teeth is then taken and the veneers will be made from that and returned to our clinic in Liverpool. Veneers can then be fitted in one appointment using a dental cement which sets very quickly. After that, all that is potentially required is a little filing to smooth away any excess cement.
