Veneers: what are they?

As a dental practice operating in Liverpool, veneers have been found by us to be one of the quickest methods of concealing cracked, chipped, or irregularly shaped teeth. They are also referred to as laminates and there are two types, either resin or porcelain. Veneers are very thin slivers of material that we bond firmly to your teeth, normally porcelain, as this has the same appearance as tooth enamel. This treatment will usually take two visits, but for more complicated procedures it can take four visits.

On the other hand resin is a composite which is often applied directly to your teeth and shaped to the profile of your teeth. However, resin can also be indirect, when a mould is taken and the veneer is produced in a laboratory.

The ideal treatment for a wide range of conditions

Teeth can often become permanently discoloured for a number of reasons. Stains can appear as a result of the use of certain drugs or from root canal treatment. Excessive fluoride and major resin fillings can also cause dental stains. Over time our teeth wear down or become chipped or cracked, uneven or irregular. Gaps between teeth can also benefit from veneers Liverpool.

Dental laminate procedure

A thorough dental examination is always the first stage undertaken for veneers Liverpool, because we need to assess the condition of your teeth and gums. To prepare your tooth to receive a veneer we need to remove a very thin layer of the enamel from the front of it. The next stage is to clean and polish the tooth before etching. This will make space for the veneer and creates a key to allow for a solid bond. We then create a model by taking an impression of your tooth, this is sent off to a laboratory for them to create the veneer that fits your tooth. Once your veneer has been received we will advise you to attend a return appointment. For porcelain veneers we apply a thin layer of the bonding adhesive to the front of your teeth. We then fit the veneer and make any adjustments that may be necessary to get the perfect fit.

Composite veneers can be direct or indirect. We always mix the solution to achieve as close a colour to your natural teeth as possible. If applied directly this is done by applying the composite solution straight onto the tooth, which is then shaped and moulded to fit exactly over it. Indirect composite veneers require a mould to be made and the veneer is manufactured in the laboratory. Once received by us we will then arrange an appointment when the new veneer will be bonded onto the tooth in a way similar to a porcelain veneer. Porcelain veneers are normally stronger and provide a closer match to your natural teeth.

Long lasting

Properly maintained and with regular visits to the dentist every six months, veneers can last for as long as ten years.
